‘Bored’ man charged in attempted arson

A Uniontown man is facing multiple charges after police allege he attempted to burn down an apartment building in Pershing Court housing complex in Uniontown early Wednesday because he was bored.

City police Officer Travis Shandor said Fred Mitchell Jr., 21, of 59 Pershing Court was charged before Magisterial District Judge Jesse Cramer with arson, causing or risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, harassment and disorderly conduct.

Shandor said police responded to Mitchell’s apartment at 4:24 a.m. and found Mitchell standing in the doorway, and saw smoke coming from the residence behind him.

Shandor said Mitchell first told officers that he had burned food, but as officers entered the residence and found the smoldering remains of paper on the stove top and on a coffee table, Mitchell admitted to attempting to burn down the apartment building because he was bored.

Shandor noted that two women inside the apartment alerted police after they saw Mitchell starting the fires after he told them he intended to burn down the building.

The apartment is one of six attached units, Shandor noted.

Mitchell was taken into custody at the scene without incident.

A preliminary hearing for Mitchell will be held at a later date before Magisterial District Judge Michael M. Metros.

Police: Friends Of Deceased Man Rob His House During Funeral

FAYETTE CITY, Pa. — Two men have been charged after police said they broke into the home of a deceased friend during his funeral in Fayette County on Wednesday.

According to police, the suspects, Douglas Hammer, 50, and Francis DeMarco, 48, knew the former homeowner, Buddy Ferris.

Police say the men removed an air conditioning unit from a window to enter the house and took liquor, some rare coins and a collectible military bayonet.

Police said the men knew about the items because they knew Farris — and also knew that his friends would be busy at a funeral home visitation for Ferris when they allegedly broke into the home on Monday.

Police said Hammer and DeMarco swiped a German dagger, alcohol and collector coins.

“This was a gentleman who helped everybody in the community,” said Ferris’ friend, Keith Bassi. “If somebody needed a ride, he was there. If somebody needed assistance, he was there to lend that help.”

DeMarco and Hammer are charged with burglary, conspiracy and trespassing. Both are being held on $20,000 bond.
